'Superhuman Enticement' is a new showroom, manufacturing and therapy building catering to clients of advanced prosthetic and Biomechatronic devices. Unlike traditional prosthetics, Biomechatronic engineering integrates living tissue with synthetic components to produce seamless and often superhuman performance. This recent generation of innovative and extremely beautiful prosthetics has radically transformed the popular perception of artificial limbs, which are now seen as desirable objects of fashion and identity rather than inelegant replacements attempting to mask the loss of the natural body part.

The project creates an architectural identity for the evolutionary, futuristic lifestyle of the contemporary amputee; a lifestyle celebrating a mysterious synthesis of organic body and technology. Similarly enigmatic effects are created through the fusion of landscape, highly articulated volumes and a luminous, gravity defying roof. Synthesizing the aesthetics of humanoid robot design and a wooded forest, the project animates the smooth, clean and continuous surfaces of the building volumes with a constantly changing light and shadow patterns produced by a space frame roof structure. This highly designed ambiance fully fuses and transforms the therapy, factory and showroom building typologies into a continuously shifting field of sophisticated, highly-differentiated architectural moments. These moments produce effects that echo the recent startling advances Biomechatronics.

// Project Design

Located in Manhattan, the project occupies an existing pier on the East River near the Manhatten Bridge. The building is a full-service Prosthetics-Biomechatronic Device Dealership consisting of a large showroom for display, zones for light manufacturing and fitting and therapy areas for clients. A continuous sports landscape for physical training slips in and out of the building and covers the entire surface of the pier.

The building consists of three primary systems: the ground, the volumes and the roof. These systems work together to control the flow of circulation on the site and create the architectural language of the project. The shapes of the volumes and the flowing patterns of the roof structure and landscape create an architecture of fluid movement and speed. Walking through the project, over ramps and through the building, clients experience enigmatic spatial effects as motion is communicated through formally different geometries that are still part of a single organic family.

The primary space of the project is the central hall, a space that is created and activated by roof, ground and adjacent volumes. This space is large, continuous and functionally diverse. Clients arrive in this space and may examine the latest products in the showroom. From here they enter the organically shaped, nested volumes that border the hall. It is within these volumes that clients are examined and fitted with their prosthetics. Additional volumes hold physical therapy spaces, fabrication, clinical and administrative design spaces. The surfaces of these volumes make enclosure—walls and floors—as well as ramps and paths that ensure the continuity of athletic movement through the factory and retail spaces.

On top of the volumes floats a large, three-dimensional space frame roof that creates a ceiling producing shadow and lighting effects through the day. This roof - a technological magic carpet covering the entire building - actually uses the organic volumes as columns and forms a nested roof space poche relationship to the surface of the organic volumes where they connect.

The design of the project 'Superhuman Enticement' demonstrates how this paradigm change can be exploited for both generalization and specification of therapy and factory building typologies as well as formal beauty. Achieving an enigmatic effect by the juxtaposition of the roof and the volumes the spacial diversity and the contrast of the smooth white clean continuous surface of the volumes and the rigid spaceframe structure of the roof.

Das Projekt untersucht das Potential einer Fusion von unterschiedlichen Gebäudetypologien, und deren Integration in einen urbanen Kontext. Die Diplomarbeit mit dem Titel Superhuman Enticement (dt. Verlockung des Übermenschlichen) nimmt Bezug auf den medizinisch-technologischen Fortschritt im Bereich der Herstellung und des Vertriebs von modernen Prothesen. Die heutige Generation von modernen Hightech Prothesen hat die allgemeine Auffassung von künstlichen Körperteilen radikal verändert, und sie zu eleganten modischen Objekten gemacht. Die Absenz eines natürlichen Körperteils wird nicht länger, nur durch künstliches substituiert, sondern verbessert und schafft damit eine neue, zukunftsorientierte Identität. Die Kombination von Natürlichem mit Künstlichem, Organischem und Technischem, Unbekanntem mit Bekanntem erzeugt einen ästhetischen Effekt der das zentrale Thema dieses Entwurfes ausmacht.

Situiert auf einem bestehenden Pier in New York, auf Manhattans East River Seite, nahe der Manhatten Bridge ist das Zentrum eine Kombination aus Schauraum, Vertrieb, Produktion und sportlichen Therapie Bereichen für Menschen mit Prothesen. Ein Sportbereich verbindet vielfach Innenraum und Aussenraum des Gebäudes und erstreckt sich als Parklandschaft über das gesamte Areal.

Die drei elementaren Systeme des Entwurfes, Landschaft, Volumen, Dach erzeugen durch ihre Geometrie vielfältige Bewegung auf dem Grundstück und definieren in ihrer Funktion die Ästhetik des Baukörpers. Urbane Elemente wie der Stadtraster, die Schnellstraße, East River sowie das sich im Dach wiederholende Rechteck bilden einen starken geometrischen Kontrast zu den organisch fließenden Volumen. Die organische Formensprache und die dynamischen parametrischen Muster des scheinbar schwebenden Daches vermitteln außergewöhnliche räumliche Effekte, wechselnde Licht- und Schatten Situationen und ein Gefühl von Geschwindigkeit und Agilität.

'Superhuman Enticement' is an iconic building prototype which displays customized biomechatronics and creates a new identity for an evolutionary future lifestyle of amputees. These Products have gone from being purely functional to become objects of fashion and identity. Considering this artificial paradigm change, Prostheses should be seen as desirable objects of beauty and efficiency rather then technological replacements masquerading the loss of the natural body part. As for example Amy Mullins, athlete, actor and activist, redefines what the body can be, by displaying speed, beauty, an extra 6 inches of height, the sexy superpowers they grant her. She is showing that in todays cultural condition there is no longer the need of disguising the disability of a human body, nor replicate or imitate the lost object, rather the desire to display the dual seduction which is commercial and erotic. The design of 'Superhuman Enticement' demonstrates how this paradigm change can be used for showcasing both generalization and specification of therapy and factory building typologies as well as formal beauty.

Situated in New York City, pier 36 on Manhattan's East River side, the building is like Chelsea Piers, except for the fact it hosts a factory. Its design demonstrates a combination of biomechatronic dealership with showroom for display purposes, fabrication facilities and athletic fields. The building offers physical therapy and individual fittings for amputees - it is all about movement and continuity of athletic movement. It encompasses retail and factory facilities which are visible to the the visitor. The one continuous large open space is organized by the building's diverse functional program and showcases spatial quality through several organically nested large volumes creating special views and effects. The surfaces of these volumes serve as enclosure, floors, walls, ramps and paths. On top of those volumes rests the roof which creates ceiling and shadow and lighting effects. This so called magic flying carpet is a 3d space frame which uses the organic volumes as columns and builds up a relationship to the surface of the organic volumes as soon as they touch each other.
Inspired by the aesthetics of Chris Cunningham's humanoid robots and Motohiko Odani's Bambi, an enigmatic effect is achieved by the juxtaposition of the roof and the volumes - showing the stark contrast between the volumes' smooth white clean continuous surface and the roof's rigid spaceframe structure .
